Certifications most likely to land you a new job

Takeaway: PMP and CCNA lead the way for certifications that are in most demand.

Project Management Professional (PMP) is the most frequently desired certification according to the latest Dice report, with nearly 2,200 requests in job postings on any given day, up nine percent year/year.

Following close on the PMP’s heels are CCNA certifications.  Job postings for Cisco Certified Network Associates  were at 1,200 on any given day, up 21% yr/yr. Entry-level network technicians have found CompTIA’s Network+ certification helpful in job hunting.
Certified Information Systems Security Professionals (CISSP) certification is asked for frequently in IT jobs based in Washington, D.C. This is because that certification, along with Security+, is required of contractors by the Department of Defense.
ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) experience and expertise remains a top area. Dice says it is becoming even more vital, with service deliverability being so essential. Those with ITIL credentials can command a six-figure salary.
Here’s the top-ten list from Dice:

  1. PMP (Project Management Professional)
  2. CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)
  3. Security+
  4. A+
  5. MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer)
  6. Network+
  7. MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional)
  8. CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional)
  9. ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library)
  10. MCITP (Microsoft Certified IT Professional)

Answering PMP Questions – Part 2

February 7, 2012 Leave a comment

In this series, I am discussing different types of PMP questions, and how to analyze the question, and review each choice, before choosing the correct answer. In the First Part, we saw how to answer PMP questions, using the information provided in Process Names.

Today, I am going to review a mock PMP question sent to me by one of our PMCHAMP Online PMP Coaching Student. Let’s look at this PMP Question first.

QUESTION: Your are the project manager of The-Magnificient-Olympic-Stadium Project. The project has a medium amount of risk and is not very well defined. The sponsor calls you for a meeting, and hands you a project charter. He then asks you to confirm that the project can be completed within the project cost budget. What is the BEST method to handle this situation?

A. Build the estimate in the form of a range of possible results.

B. Ask the team members to help estimate the cost based on the project charter.

C. Based on the information you have, calculate a parametric estimate.

D. Provide an analogous estimate based on past history.

Go ahead, and make a choice. You must take a stand. Don’t worry if it is right or wrong. Just choose A, B, C or D.

Now, as you know, you have to do 200 questions in 4 hours, which gives you barely 80 seconds per question. Therefore, you must be quick in reading, analyzing, and then choosing the Best answer.

Most people choose  option B. According to them, option C, D, A don’t necessarily confirm if the project can be completed within budget. They tell me that these options can give us an idea but can’t really ‘confirm’. Therefore, Option B seems to be the only best answer.

Vinai,

Yesterday I passed the PMP and I am in celebration mode! I must say, your program was the key to my success. From the beginning, I concluded your program would be more helpful to me than the other tools I used on my first try. Your daily classes are very concise and complete. I referred to them for clarification on difficult topics such as Procurements and Cost. Thanks again for your help.

I highly recommend taking Vinai’s practice tests first, then others. Reviewing all the test answer explanations are extremely important.

All the best

David S., PMP

Hello Vinai,

I passed the PMP and I must admit, your program was extremely helpful in understanding the material. Since October I have been watching your videos and your program is good enough to understand the concept on the whole. I referred to the videos related to cost, time, procurement and Risk and closing process once again. Also before the exam I did all the PMCHAMP mock questions. I read Rita’s book and used PMBOK for reference only. Thanks again, Vinai for your easy to understand program.

Answering PMP Questions – Part 1

February 3, 2012 Leave a comment

Recently, one of our PMChamp online coaching students asked me about a mock PMP question. I thought of sharing it with you, so that all of our PMP aspirants can also benefit from the analysis, and use this kind of thinking in your PMP exam.

QUESTION: In your project, as part of Distribute Information process, you have created an information retrieval system, which helps team members and stakeholders to share information. What will you do next?

A. Create a communications management plan

B. Perform stakeholder analysis to develop a methodical and logical view of information needs

C. Determine methods of accessing information for scheduled communications

D. Conduct regular status review meetings to exchange information on the project

First of all, make your own choice of the answer. Go ahead, don’t be shy. Choose only ONE answer – A, B, C or D.

Good. Now let’s analyze this question…

Question Analysis:

If you look at the question – you have done something in the “Distribute Information” process.

The first step is to find where you are – in which process group and in knowledge area. Now try to think about the Processes as listed in the PMBOK guide.  In which process group and knowledge area is this process of Distribute Information usually done?

This process is done during the “Executing” process group.  Therefore it is clear that you are in project execution phase. Secondly, this belongs to the “Communication Management” Knowledge Area. This tells you clearly where you are in terms of the Processes.

Is reading the PMBOK Guide enough to pass the PMP Exam?

January 27, 2012 Leave a comment

At the training institute where I conduct 5 Day PMP Exam Preparation workshops, many busy project managers come and say something like this:

“I don’t have much time. I am a very busy person. I can’t be spending 5 days going though this project management training program…”, or

“Listen, I have over 20 years of project management experience, and I could easily teach all about Project Managemnet easily. How about you just give me the course material, and books etc., and I’ll prepare for the exam myself. And I am not asking for any favour, I’ll pay for the material and books. In fact, I  think that if I just go through the PMBOK Guide,  I’m pretty sure I can pass the exam easily.”

Some post on the PMP Forum, about whether there is a  need to study the PMBOK guide or not?

The PMP Training coordinators listen patiently, and says something like: “Yes, you can read the PMBOK guide. But that alone may not be sufficient. What you need is a thorough understanding of the Project Management Methodology. And you also need to understand what PMI like to test you on in the PMP exam. Just reading the PMBOK guide, and understanding “how it applies to the PMP exam” are very different things“. You need to be in an “exam taking mode” when you study the PMBOK guide.

Reading the PMBOK Guide is very boring!

Added to this, reading the PMBOK guide is not easy. It is very dry, boring, and difficult to read after a couple of pages… No wonder it is called the best “sleeping pill” by many PMP aspirants… When you begin reading the PMBOK guide, everything seems pretty simple, and easy to understand. But remember, the exam is not as straight forward as it may seem.

In The Exam, To Understand Each TT is Very Important.

January 25, 2012 Leave a comment

Here is what Rodrigo has to say about the PMP exam. He just passed the PMP exam today. He took his online training at PMChamp.com

—-
Vinai,

Just to tell you that today I passed the PMP exam. I think your course help me a lot in order to understand the material of each process focusing in the core and the integration with everything and reaching the certification. I watched your videos at least 2 times (4 in some cases like risk management and procurement) following all your course (questions and tips), I also use the Rita Mulcahy resources (book and PM fast track software). I did a lot of practice questions (more than 500) because I don’t read very fast in English (I´m from México-Spanish native) and I needed to be in a familiar environment like the exam.

In the exam, to understand each TT is very important, to understand what to DO FIRST is very important and to know where you are in the project process processes is critical. The exam is easy if you work a lot in the situation but it is tiring. Few question about the input and output. Few calculations about earned value but you need to handle all the measurements very well. Time management problems are easy also.

Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards.
Rodrigo Mendoza, PMP
